NEWS FROM AFRICA

There are two big items from the Good Samaritan Home to celebrate. One is the arrival of fifty beds purchased through the Rotary grant. Mercy Thuo wrote on July 3, "The children are fine and sleeping comfortably on the new beds and mattresses." She enclosed pictures confirming their arrival which I hope to have on our website soon.

The pictures from the children from the Good Samaritan Home arrived in time for them to be a part of the Internation Convergence Conference (Weavers' Guild) in Tampa Bay. Laura wrote to the children, "Thank you so much for your inspiring and beautiful pictures."

The Surface Design Guild of Tampa Bay was equally impressed, FAF Board member and curator of the show wrote Sarah Butz wrote: "I have received your many wonderful drawings. Everyone that I have shown them to is so impressed. I am going to hurry and put them together into a banner for the show on Monday night. We have invited the public to come to the big library in Clearwater for a small party to see all of the banners created by children. Thank you for sending your drawings." These images will find there way onto the web soon.

Along with the pictures came photos of the children, and women making baskets, and 80 necklaces for FAF to sell to help support The Good Samaritan Home.

Ms. Thuo noted in the July letter that there is a food shortage in Kenya at this time which is affecting the home. FAF will address this need soon.

THE CLOTH

Laura is making hand painted silk scarves and paintings for FAF. Laura plans to dye 12 scarves this summer--some with African Designs. These will be found at the Fulton Street Artisan's Market and at Pampered Goddess. Sales of watercolors has been good. Laura and Lucy Ramshaw are planning a trip to Chicago this summer to pick out new textiles for fall items. Watch for new cloth and new ideas.

BOARD NEWS

Congratulations and welcome to new Board Member, Nancy Abbott. Nancy lives in Dunedin, FL and has been a devoted volunteer for a year. Along with her husband Andy, Nancy is spending the summer getting her home in Connecticut ready for sale so Andy and Nancy will be full time Floridians.

Reelected unanimously were Pat Callan as Vice-President and Betsy Knox as Secretary.

FUND RAISERS

"FAF Garage Sale North" features all the stuff we need to get out of our garages and closets and into the hands of loving owners. And vice-versa. The sale will be at the home of Roger and Rose Ellis at 238 Morris St. Grand Rapids, 49503 on August 22-24. Drop off day is August 21. Start saving those trashy treasures for the sale now, and collect your pennies and dollars to buy good goods.

"Crafty Deals" features yarn, fabric, paints, frames, all of those over-stocked craft items packing the basement and attics of our homes. This will be a great place for you to get rid of old hobbies and find some new ones. The sale will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in September. Date to be announced.

MEMBERSHIP

It's time to re-up your membership for FAF. The popular media has dropped AIDS orphans to report Hollywood gossip, but we know that you have not forgotten needy ones still struggling to make and keep a meaningful life. Membership dollars pay office expenses, public relations and postage so we can dedicate donations and sales directly to widows and children affected by AIDS. To find out more about how FAF handles its finances, go to our website, www.fabulousafricanfabrics.org. Those of you who already have paid your 08-09 dues will received a card from FAF that your dues are paid.

THANKS FOR THE DONATIONS

FAF raised $80.00 from its Schuler Books and Music Days.

The Surface Design Guild of Tampa Bay donated $50.00 in special appreciation for the beautiful pictures drawn by the children of The Good Samaritan Home.

Banners by Good Samaritan Children
Written by Laura Salazar
Wednesday, 04 June 2008

The long-awaited banners with pictures drawn by the children of The Good Samaritan Home are available for the world to see at the Clearwater , Florida Downtown Library.

The children of the Good Samaritan Home created drawings that were five inches square.  The topic was "Who Am I?"  Drawings included animals, sports, grandmothers, and neighbors.  These pictures were put into banners by Sarah Butz.  The Surface Design Guild of Tampa Bay provided financial support for this project.

Sarah's class at the Boys and Girls Club in St. Petersburg, Florida also made banners that are in the shown.  These banners were inspired by seeing a video about life at the home.

Laura Salazar's silk painting remembering the riots in the Rift Valley of Kenya is on exhibit at the Dunedin, FL Fine Arts Center.
