Fabulous African Fabrics:Supporting AIDS Widows and Orphans in Kenya

Fabulous African Fabrics is a non-profit organization supported by a broad variety of crafts persons and people interested in being a part of AIDS projects in Kenya, the United States, and around the world.

FAF turns African prints into useful and colorful clothing and linens. Profits from the sale of the pieces go to agencies working with AIDS widows and orphans, such as the Good Samaritan Home in Nairobi and Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya. Health professionals in Kenya estimate that 6 percent of the population is HIV positive. This epidemic has left millions of widows and orphans without support, with many more being added every day.

Membership

FAF is a membership organization with members throughout the United States and 2 other countries. FAF brings people together who are interested in the welfare of Kenyan AIDS widows and children affected by HIV/AIDS.  Many of these members combine humanitarian interest with a passion for African textiles.  Others are artists and craftspersons who enjoy working with textiles from Africa.

Other members enjoy FAF's lectures, crafting events, public forums, and parties.   We love to help others and we love to laugh.  Members receive publications, and news releases before the general public.  They make friends and join in making decisions about the organization that will affect lives in Kenya.

The annual membership dues are $20.00 for an individual, $30.00 for a family.

The membership year is August 1 through July 31.  Those who join in June or July will be considered members for the following fiscal year.

Safe Drug Use for New Mothers
Written by Laura Salazar
Thursday, 11 January 2007
When women with AIDS give birth in Africa, they are given a dosage of nevirapine to prevent passing the disease on to their newborns.  This has given rise to a resistant AIDS virus in the mother.  Now researchers have devised a way to protect both mother and child through delaying additional treatment in the mother for a short period.  In another study doctors gave AZT to the women after delivery.  Both methods seem to work.  This is particularly useful in poor countries where women do not have contact with health authorities until they are in labor.  For details see the January 11 New York Times, page A10.
